Warm, walkable and ready for photos
Hay bales, muddy rows and golden-hour photos. Here's what to wear for all three.
Pictured above: the Leonie V-Neck Patch Knit Pullover (Dark Brush); the Simple Street Side Slit Oversized Sweater (Ash Jade) with the Smooth Moves Microsuede Skirt (Rust); and the Cozy Fade Washed 3/4 Sleeve Relaxed Sweater (Black) with The Luxe Prowl Animal Print Pleated Pants.
A pumpkin patch outfit has a lot to handle. It has to stand up to uneven ground and a wagon ride, stay warm when the afternoon cools off, and still look good in the photo you'll actually post. So we planned around the day itself: what you'll walk on, what you'll sit on, and what the light does at 5 p.m.
Every look below is styled exactly as we shot it.
For the hayride
Plaid trousers and a soft henley

Plaid is the pumpkin patch print, and wide trousers are the grown-up way to wear it. A navy and gray plaid feels cooler than the usual red flannel, and a heather beige henley softens it. Half-tuck the sweater so the pleats show.
Wide legs also mean no tight denim to climb onto a hay wagon in.
For the sunny ones
A V-neck knit and a long flare

Not every October patch day is cold. When it's 72 and bright, a mid-weight V-neck with pushed-up sleeves is plenty. The warm brown reads fall even in full sun, and the long flare balances the slouchy knit.
For the corn maze
A washed sweater and printed pleats

A little print goes a long way in a field of orange. Brown animal-print pleated pants are the loud part, so keep the top quiet: a faded black sweater with 3/4 sleeves you won't have to push up while you pick pumpkins.
For the cool afternoon
A tee, a shacket and wide jeans

Start the morning in a soft mocha tee and wide jeans with a brown belt. When the wind picks up around 4, the denim shacket goes on. Denim on denim works here because the shades are close and the tee breaks them up.
It's the easiest look in this post, and the one you'll wear again on Monday.
For the photo
A big sweater and a suede mini

Jade and rust: the color pair that looks best next to a pile of pumpkins.
This is the one for the family photo. An oversized side-slit sweater falls just past a rust suede mini, so you get a lot of cozy with a little leg. Add tall boots and it handles the field, too.

What should I wear to a pumpkin patch?
Jeans or sturdy pants, a sweater you can layer, and closed-toe boots or sneakers you don't mind getting dusty. Bring a light jacket for the late afternoon.
Can you wear riding boots to a pumpkin patch?
Yes. Knee-high riding boots with a low block heel handle grass and gravel well, and they look great in photos with a mini skirt or tucked-in straight jeans.
What colors photograph best at a pumpkin patch?
Navy, jade, cream, denim and soft browns. They stand out against orange pumpkins without competing, and they keep the photo feeling warm.
What do I wear to a pumpkin patch if it's warm out?
Keep the jeans and swap the heavy knit for a light layer you can take off, like a denim shacket over a tee.
