How to Layer Outfits for Fall
One base, one layer, one good pair of pants. Four formulas you can copy this week.
Cover: Vintage Drift Fleece Jacket (Light Olive), Calla Tee (White) and Precision Seam Jeans.
Layering is just math. A thin piece goes underneath, something with texture goes on top, and the bottom stays quiet so the layers are what you notice. Below are two formulas straight from our shoots, plus two you can build from pieces that were made to go together.
Formula 01 · As shot

The easiest layer there is. A plain white crewneck tee works as a blank background, so the acid-washed fleece jacket stands out. Leave the jacket unzipped and let it hang. Straight jeans keep the outfit long and simple.

Formula 02 · As shot

Want to keep wearing a dress into fall? Put a cardigan over it. This one has short sleeves and a boxy shape, so it sits right at the waist and the dress still shows underneath. Mocha over chocolate brown keeps the colors close, so it reads as one outfit.
Three rules for layering
- Thinnest layer closest to you. Tees, tanks and shirts go under knits, not over them.
- Let one edge show: a collar, a lace trim, a hem. That small peek is what makes it look layered on purpose.
- Keep the bottom simple. If you're wearing three tops, wear one plain pair of jeans.

How do you layer outfits for fall?
Start with a thin base like a tee, tank or button-down, add one middle or outer layer such as a vest, cardigan or jacket, and keep the bottom simple. Two or three layers is plenty.
How do you style a sweater vest?
Wear it over a collared button-down so the collar and cuffs show, then pair it with straight or wide-leg jeans. Ivory and camel vests are the easiest to start with.
Can you wear a cardigan over a dress?
Yes. A short or cropped cardigan over a mini dress keeps the waist visible. Match the cardigan to a color in the dress for an easy finish.
What should I wear under an open jacket?
A plain crewneck tee. It keeps the focus on the jacket and works with any jeans.
